f you have your own boat here are some suggested boat trips to make in the South Tampa area.
If you are launch your boat at either Gandy Park or Picnic Island you have the opportunity to fish the flats off either shore of the bay. If you are just cruising around you can cross Old Tampa Bay and explore Riviera Bay, near Weedon Island. There are some sandbars exposed in lower tides that people congregate on. If you head into Riviera Bay, be sure to mind the channel markers as the water can be very shallow. Another option from these launches is to head North and check out the Courtney Campbell Causeway. If you are interested in driving your boat to a restaurant you have some choices in Old Tampa Bay. You will find: Whiskey Joe's, Hula Bay, IC Sharks and the Getaway, and a few more. Of course, you could travel to more depending on the range of your boat.
If you launch from Davis Islands or Ballast Point you can give yourself a tour of Davis Islands canals. Be cautious as they get very shallow at points. The Hillsborough River is a nice trip to make from either of these launch points and there are several places that you can stop for a bite to eat or drink. Rick's, Sail Pavilion, or Columbia Cafe are not the only choices available, but probably the easiest to get to. If you decide to travel up the Hillsborough stay near the center of the river and don't bother going North of I-275. Beyond the Interstate you are asking to damage your prop . You can cruise up the Palm River and stop at the Thai Temple for lunch on Sundays. If you are interested in stopping on an island or a sandbar you have a couple of options. Fantasy Island is a small park on the East side of the Northern Spoil Island in the bay. Another popular island is Beer Can Island , which is the small island just South of the Southern Spoil Island. The Spoil Islands are the large rectangular islands out in the bay. If you have the range on your boat you could also make it over to check out the Alafia River, Little Manatee River and the rest that the South Shore of the bay has to offer.
